Business in Elwood
Elwood is unique and has long been known for its historic downtown district, where the celebrated Leeson’s Department Store was based for five decades, and the historic Opera House, built in 1891, still stands.
Its charming downtown today is home to a number of lovely small businesses, such as Gypsy Soul, Cloud Nine, Indescribable Gifts, Two Guys’ Pet Boutique, and the historic Opera House Pub. Downtown Elwood is also home to the Elwood Chamber of Commerce, the Pipe Creek-Elwood Historical Society, and the Hope Center, which houses the Pipe Creek trustee’s office, the Morrisett Center, and WIC.
Elwood’s major employers are Red Gold (tomato processing products), ELSA (fuel tanks, exhaust systems, and structural components for OEM customers), J. Lewis Small Company (graduation, championship and award rings), Ascension-St.Vincent Mercy Hospital (medical), Kadet Products (machining, welding and rebuilding industrial components), Progressive Plastic Inc. (plastic products), and two glass-art manufacturing companies – House of Glass and Carol’s Legacy Art.
The Elwood Chamber is an advocate for small businesses. While it’s fun to find a good deal at the big box stores, small business makes an important contribution to our local economy. Small businesses may not be able to offer products at the the lowest price, but they more than make up for it in service and giving back to the community. Think big, shop small!
