Annual Awards Dinner & Celebration
The Elwood Chamber’s Annual Awards Dinner and Celebration is typically held in November. Open to members and non-members alike, the event is held in one of the city’s upscale venues, and features an open bar, a delicious meal, a state of the Chamber update by the director, the presentation of awards, and a lighthearted entertainment program. The awards presented include:
Chamber Legacy Award
The Chamber Legacy Award is presented to a Chamber member — either individual(s) or couple — who has been an instrumental influence on the Chamber of Commerce and the community of Elwood for many years. The distinction is awarded to the person(s) who has created a legacy of leadership for others to follow and has displayed a consistent and tenured example of commitment to their business, consumers, and community.
Hoosier Heart Award
The Hoosier Heart Award is bestowed on the individual who shows “heart” for both their community and profession as chosen by the Chamber of Commerce staff. The recipient of the Hoosier Heart Award is someone who inspires people to get involved and make a difference in the lives of others. The recipient displays the qualities of leadership, cooperation and teamwork. As an inspiring force for what it means to serve our community, this person has the leadership qualities that motivate others to action and often go unheralded.
Business of the Year Award
The Business of the Year Award goes to one of the Chamber’s business, organization, or company members that demonstrates the essence of “community.” This business, organization, or company excels in their business practices, offers unmatched customer service, and has a tenured history within the Elwood community. The recipient supports local merchants, is active within the community and supports local charitable events and organizations in an enviable way.
“Raeburn O’Malley Cannon” Citizen of the Year Award

The Citizen of the Year Award is presented to a Chamber member — either an individual or a couple — who exudes community pride, has a passion for Elwood and our community, and displays leadership, initiative, creativity, and dedication. The recipient of this award takes initiative within community events and demonstrates the ability to take charge by creating or developing activities that impact the community as a whole. The recipient is highly regarded by co-workers, peers and fellow citizens. Lastly, the award recipient contributes positively not only within their work environment but to the entire city of Elwood.
Raeburn Ann (O’Malley) Cannon was an active volunteer in local community affairs. She graduated in 1933 from the College of St. Scholastic in Duluth, Minn. She received her master’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1934 and earned her doctorate from the University of Michigan. |
She was a volunteer tutor in the Madison County Adult Literacy Program. Mrs. Cannon was a member of the Midwestern Speaker’s Bureau for the American Association of University Women and was one of the first public speakers to utilize memory imaging as part of her program. She was an active volunteer in the Elwood community and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Mrs. Cannon served as a volunteer with the St.Vincent Mercy Hospital, S.C.O.R.E. of Madison County, and the Madison County Visiting Nurse/Hospice Program. She was named Hospice Volunteer of the Year in 2003.
